THROW SHAPES is an independent dance kura run by Milo Haigh in sunny Mohua.
Throw Shapes offers after school dance classes for tamariki and rangatahi aged 5 to 18, along with adult classes and dance movement therapy sessions for takiwātanga and aroreretini (neurodivergent) students during school hours. Throw Shapes is for EVERY-BODY.
Our kaupapa is about finding the gold in everyone, making space to be brave and ridiculous, having fun, trying hard and celebrating creativity and connection.
We aim to give our rural tamariki as broad exposure to dance and performing arts experiences as their urban counterparts every year.
From opportunities to perform in music videos for NZ music artists, to workshops led by kaiako from all over the motu, performing in regional showcases, and group trips to see live performances in Whakatu and beyond.
We make sure our tamariki get to show off on the big stage as well as in the studio.
We work towards creating our own shows every year but performance itself is not a requirement. Milo firmly believes that dance is about more than performing. If a dancer feels like getting on stage is a special kind of torture…we totally get it. We encourage everyone to participate in a way that feels on the right side of challenging for them. If that’s standing on the side and making sound effects or supporting just by clapping along, we will love that mahi too!
